Update: 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Status

On September 2, 2025 the Bona Dea Project Inc applied for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. On September 22, 2025 we received the letter confirming our status.

What does this mean? It means donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. It also allows us to apply for certain grants to help fund the organization, giving us additional means to support the community.

Our board of directors is actively researching grants and other funding, while also planning for future events and methods of support for the community.

We will continue to share updates here and on our Facebook page to share our work and invite you to participate in whatever way works best for you.

What is a 501(c)(3)? Section 501(c)(3) is the portion of the US Internal Revenue Code that allows for federal tax exemption of nonprofit organizations that meet the code’s requirements. These nonprofits may be considered public charities, private foundations, or private operating foundations, which we’ll explain in more detail later.

501(c)(3) is just one category of 501(c) organizations, but it is the primary nonprofit status through which donations made to the organization are tax-deductible. 501(c)(3) status is regulated and administered by the US Department of Treasury through the Internal Revenue Service. [source]
